REGAIN YOUR PERSPECTIVE. RECLAIM YOUR PURPOSE. RENEW YOUR VITALITY. RECHARGE YOUR INSPIRATION. REVITALIZE YOUR CREATIVITY. REDISCOVER YOUR VISION
I have been a psychotherapist for twenty-five years with a private practice in Santa Monica and Topanga Canyon. I greatly enjoy the teaching and clinical supervision I provide to interns working towards licensure as Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Psychologists. In addition to keeping me professionally sharp and current there have been untold benefits from my efforts to support the democratic side of therapy and the prevention model of community mental health.
I am trained to work with individuals, couples, adolescents and families. I have a general adult practice with specialties in treating mood disorders (depression, bi-polar, anxiety spectrum), co-occurring issues involved with addiction and personality disorders. Specialized training I’ve received informs my professional emphasis on relationship counseling whether that be in marriages, other constellations of couples and families.
A particular focus of my practice has been helping clients cope with and integrate difficult emotions occurring during challenging adult developmental transitions. This is frequently when many turn to therapy as “shelter from the storm” and the confusion from being plunged into a great abyss of transition. These experiences may be initiated by a variety of situations – bereavement, illness or disablement, the crisis of physical trauma, victimization or addiction, being fired, empty nest, mid-life crises, career changes, divorce, adjusting to becoming first time parents or coping with the increasing dependency of elderly parents with frail health.
Suffering from common psychological effects, such as feelings of fear, loss, an absence of meaning, identity disruption and sense of being overwhelmed by life’s unfairness or its uncertainties is the catalyst for many individuals to seek help by entering psychotherapy. This is when most knock on my door and it may speak to the experience of those looking at my website.
Every life brings these moments of being plunged into change. Surviving the chaos is the hero’s journey and I can be your ally on this path as I have done successfully with many others. Time to knock on my door.
Although not a sun-dappled hallmark card, these moments of major life transition can often be pivotal opportunities to refresh and revitalize our vision. The goal and outcome of therapy is to emerge from troubled times with a deeper sense of self-acceptance, wisdom and a renewed connection with others. Let me be your ally on this heroic journey.
I have extensive experience treating the symptoms of post traumatic and acute stress disorders as well. My several years as the program director and clinical supervisor of a Crisis Intervention and Brief Therapy training program within a community mental health clinic equipped me with the competence and confidence to address crisis situations. When necessary, I am comfortable applying a solution focused modality that helps clients return to the stability of pre-crisis functioning. I am also qualified to work with those who struggle with chronic illness with a speciality in helping individuals challenged by the symptoms and treatment of Hepatitis C.
I believe strongly that the social and cultural context, spiritual as well if the client chooses, of psychological healing needs to be understood and supported. Both my professional training and personal experience as a stranger in a foreign land makes me sensitive to multicultural issues that can significantly impact treatment. I have many years of training and experience as an effective practitioner of the holistic approach to emotional health.
KNOW THY SELF
THIS HAS BEEN THE SIREN CALL OF COMMON SENSE SINCE THE TIME OF SOCRATES. WHEN DID SELF AWARENESS BECOME A CRUX OR SELF INDULGENCE. THE OLD WISE ADAGE REMAINS TRUE THROUGH THE CENTURIES OF MANKIND: LOVING ONESELF IS A PREREQUISTE FOR MAKING DEEP CONNECTIONS IN THE RELATIONSHIP I HAVE WITH MYSELF, OTHERS AND THE WORLD.
EMBRACING OUR CORE AUTHENTIC SELF GIVES US A MAP ON WHERE WE WANT TO BE AND OPENS US UP TO OUR SOUL AND SPIRIT AS RESOURCES FOR UNDERSTANDING BEYOND JUST THE ANALYTICAL MIND.
WE ALL LOOSE THE FLOW, GET STUCK AND STAGNANT, SUFFER THE LACK OF VITALITY. THERAPY CAN BE THE PROCESS OF DISCOVERING A SENSE OF MOVEMENT AGAIN. A SHIFT OF VISION THAT OPENS UP NEW POSSIBILITIES. SELFHOOD IS THE BALANCED AND INTEGRATED CENTER HOLDING THE SKILLFUL TENSION BETWEEN OUR SELFLESS AND SELFISH PARTS.
